The New York Jets gained thousands of new fans this year with the acquisition of famed Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre after an intense media driven period of talks with Packers management led them to trade him to New York in August of 2008. It was a late victory for the Jets who had originally planned to get Favre in 1991 in the NFL draft only to have the Atlanta Falcons choose him first. While New York already has thousands of loyal and devoted fans but with the addition of such a well known and adored powerhouse at QB, that fan base has grown exponentially.

The Jets got their start as one of the charter members of the American Football League in 1960, though they were then known as the New York Titans. It wasn’t until 1963 when the new owner Sonny Werblin took over that he would give them the name we all recognize today – an homage to the sound of the airplanes overhead from nearby LaGuardia airport. Four years later, the Jets stepped things up with the addition of a little Broadway to the team.

Joe Namath or “Broadway Joe” as he was known was the man who led the Jets to their best season at the time with a record of 8-5-1. He was the first pro football quarterback to surpass the 4,000 yard mark in passing and he did it his very first year with the New York Jets. Some of us were lucky enough to be able to see Broadway Joe in action firsthand – in my case my dad was a huge fan of Namath from his days at Alabama and we got tickets on a family trip to New York.
